What Are Howdens Worktops?
Howdens worktops refer to the surfaces supplied by Howdens Joinery, one of the largest kitchen suppliers in the United Kingdom. Unlike many other kitchen brands, Howdens primarily operates through a trade model, meaning their kitchens and worktops are usually purchased by builders, kitchen installers or contractors rather than directly by homeowners.
Their worktops are typically offered as part of complete kitchen packages. This makes them convenient for installers working on standard kitchen layouts. Nevertheless, homeowners who want a more bespoke or luxury kitchen often explore other options before making a final decision.
Understanding the materials available is therefore the first step when evaluating whether these worktops meet the expectations of a modern kitchen renovation.
Materials Commonly Found in Howdens Worktops
Different materials are used across the range of Howdens worktops. Each option offers distinct advantages, but also certain limitations.
Laminate Worktops
Laminate is one of the most common surfaces used in entry-level kitchens.
Advantages include:
-
Affordable cost
-
Wide range of colours and finishes
-
Easy installation
However, laminate worktops have limitations when compared with stone surfaces. They are generally less resistant to heat, scratches and moisture. Over time, heavy use in a busy kitchen may lead to visible wear.
For this reason, laminate worktops are often chosen for budget-conscious projects rather than long-term kitchen upgrades.
Quartz Worktops
Quartz worktops are engineered surfaces made from crushed quartz combined with resins and pigments.
Their main advantages include:
-
Excellent durability
-
Consistent appearance
-
Low maintenance
Quartz is significantly stronger than laminate and offers a more premium aesthetic. Nevertheless, the quality of quartz surfaces can vary depending on slab thickness, manufacturing process and brand.
If you are considering quartz worktops or natural stone alternatives for your kitchen renovation, our team can guide you through the best options available. Simply Request your quote to explore a curated selection of high-quality surfaces.
Timber Worktops
Wooden worktops remain popular in traditional kitchen designs.
Typical timber options include:
-
Oak
-
Walnut
-
Beech
Timber worktops add warmth and character to a kitchen space. However, they require regular maintenance and sealing to prevent moisture damage or staining.
Without proper care, timber surfaces can deteriorate over time, particularly in areas exposed to water and heat.
How Much Do Howdens Worktops Cost?
The price of Howdens worktops depends largely on the material chosen and the size of the kitchen installation.
Typical price ranges in the UK may include:
| Material | Estimated Price Range |
|---|---|
| Laminate Worktops | £80 – £250 per section |
| Timber Worktops | £200 – £500 |
| Quartz Worktops | £400 – £800+ |
These estimates do not always include fabrication, installation or additional edge detailing.
For homeowners investing in a full kitchen renovation, the choice of worktop material often becomes one of the most important decisions. A well-chosen surface can dramatically improve both the aesthetics and the long-term durability of the kitchen.
Advantages of Howdens Worktops
There are several reasons why these worktops are commonly chosen for kitchen installations across the UK.
Accessibility
Howdens products are widely available through a large network of depots across the country. This makes them convenient for builders and kitchen installers.
Compatibility with Standard Kitchens
The worktops are designed to fit standard kitchen layouts, which simplifies installation for trade professionals.
Competitive Pricing
Entry-level materials such as laminate provide an affordable option for homeowners working with limited renovation budgets.
Limitations to Consider
Although Howdens worktops are widely used, there are certain limitations that homeowners should consider before committing to a final choice.
Limited Selection of Luxury Materials
The range often focuses on practical materials rather than premium natural stones.
Standardised Dimensions
Because the worktops are produced for typical kitchen installations, they may not always provide the flexibility required for bespoke kitchen designs.
Durability Differences
Materials such as laminate may not offer the same lifespan as natural stone or high-quality porcelain surfaces.
For homeowners seeking long-term durability and distinctive aesthetics, exploring premium materials can often provide a more satisfying result.
Luxury Alternatives to Howdens Worktops
Many modern kitchen renovations increasingly feature natural stone or advanced engineered surfaces. These materials offer superior durability and visual impact.
At MyKitchenWorktop, we specialise in premium surfaces that transform kitchens into elegant and functional living spaces.
Quartzite Worktops
Quartzite is one of the most durable natural stones available for kitchens.
Its main characteristics include:
-
Exceptional hardness
-
High resistance to heat and scratches
-
Unique natural patterns
Quartzite combines the luxurious appearance of marble with the strength of granite, making it a preferred choice for high-end kitchens.
Granite Worktops
Granite has been a trusted kitchen material for decades.
Advantages include:
-
Excellent heat resistance
-
Long lifespan
-
Distinctive natural patterns
Granite worktops are particularly suitable for homeowners who want a durable and timeless kitchen surface.
Porcelain and Ceramic Worktops
Porcelain worktops represent one of the most advanced surface technologies available today.
Their benefits include:
-
Ultra-compact structure
-
Resistance to heat, stains and scratches
-
Modern, contemporary appearance
These surfaces are frequently used in contemporary kitchen designs where durability and minimal maintenance are essential.

Custom worktops provide:
-
Precise measurements for any kitchen layout
-
A wider selection of premium materials
-
Unique edge profiles and finishes
-
Improved durability and longevity
A bespoke surface ensures that the worktop fits seamlessly within the overall kitchen design while delivering superior performance over time.
Choosing the Right Worktop for Your Kitchen
Selecting the right worktop involves balancing several factors:
-
Budget
-
durability
-
maintenance requirements
-
visual impact
